You're in for an unforgettable four days with passionate, like-minded people who'll take on the world with you. It's fun. It's challenging but incredibly worth it. Many of our past delegates and alumni have said that OYP was the first time they really had a chance to speak their mind about socially relevant topics. You may leave the weekend feeling like a better public speaker, or a more active listener. OYP could unlock a new interest of yours. It will definitely grow your network!
Whether you consider yourself proficient in parliamentary procedure or are just looking to expand your horizons, Ontario Youth Parliament welcomes you. For most people, OYP is their first introduction to all things parliament and debate. OYP follows parliamentary procedure during debate in our House, but will walk you through each of the day's events. Your learning and growth is our number one priority, so if you ever have any questions there will always be a cabinet member, fellow delegate or Adult Resource Counsellor to ask. Chances are, they once were wondering the exact same thing.
Parliament values our extroverted and introverted delegates equally. Whether you consider yourself to be more on the shy side or very outgoing, we have no doubts you’ll find something to love about OYP. Throughout the weekend, there will be a quiet space available if you need a break as well.
OYP began a hundred years ago as an organization within the United Church of Canada. We've changed since then, but we still have a relationship with many churches across Ontario. Each year, a different congregation hosts the parliament; we couldn't make it happen without their hospitality. We value their community and welcome the opportunity to explore spiritual questions in an open and non-judgmental fashion.
Ontario Youth Parliament is a non-denominational organization but we encourage all faith and spiritual practises (as well as folks who do not identify with any practise). Throughout the weekend there will be short prayers that occur throughout the day that are optional to participate in.
You need to be 14-21 years old as of January 1, 2025; and have at least started high school.
The registration fee covers bus transportation within Ontario for those more than 100 km away from our host city, food, and all activities and events from Friday evening to Monday afternoon. For delegates staying at the OYP hotel, there will be an additional accommodation fee.
Adult Resource Counsellors (ARCs) help run Parliament; many of them are OYP alumni with an interest in seeing new generations discover OYP. All ARCs are required to submit a Police Record Check prior to serving in a mentorship role with OYP.
If you live more than 100 km from the host city, transportation is included in your registration fee. We charter coach buses to pick up and drop off delegates at major city centres across the province. The specific pick up and drop off locations will be determined closer to the yearly OYP event. Adult Resource Counsellors provide supervision during transportation.
The organizers will arrange accommodations at a local hotel or residence for all out of town delegates. Your accommodations will provide a bed to sleep in, breakfast in the morning, and transportation to and from Parliament. Delegates are paired up with at least one other delegate (of the same gender identity). This is a unique opportunity for delegates to get to know each other; picture late-night sharing snacks while discussing legislation and how chic the premier's shoes are.
We plan our meals to accommodate common allergies (e.g. nuts, dairy, tomatoes). If you have any food allergies or sensitivities, please indicate them on the registration form and meal arrangements will be made for you. If you wish to discuss specific arrangements, please contact the Registrar.
